Important Dates

Whether you are a sole trader or a director, you need to remember the important dates throughout the year to avoid fines and penalties.

6th April

The first day of the new tax year is 6th April. You don’t have to do your accounts and tax return from this date, but it will be easier if you do.

6th July

If you have staff who have benefits then you may have to file P11d’s for them. The deadline is 6th July.

31 July

Payments on accounts for self assessment are due by 31st July, if your tax bill was above £1,000. Not sure if you have something due? Login to your government gateway account and it will tell you in there.

5th October

If you are new to self assessment then you must register with HMRC by 5th October if your sales exceed £1,000. Below £1,000 and you can claim trading allowance and not register.

31st October

The deadline for paper self assessment tax returns is 31st October.

31st December

If you are employed and self employed, you can pay your tax through your tax code if you owe less than £3,000 and file your tax return by 31st December.

31st January

The deadline for self assessment tax returns and payment of your tax is 31st January.

5th April

The last day of the tax year is 5th April.

Accounts deadline

If you are a director then you need to file your accounts by the deadline. The deadline is 9 months after your year end.

Corporation tax

Limited companies pay corporation tax on their profits. The deadline for the payment is 9 months and 1 day after the year end. The deadline for the return to be filed, is 12 months after the year end.

Confirmation statement

Limited companies are required to file a confirmation statement to Companies House once a year. You can check when they are due by checking on the Companies House website.

VAT returns

If you are registered for VAT you need to file returns (usually quarterly but sometimes monthly) the returns are due by 7th of the second month following the return date. For example if your VAT return goes from 1st April to 30th June, you need to file it by 7th August.

PAYE payments

If you run a payroll you must pay your PAYE by 22nd of the following month, if you pay monthly.
